Supersonic speeds

• Large and low results in more turbulent and fierce convection, with more supersonic flows.
• As the soundspeed increase with temperature and density, the smallest soundspeeds are associated with the cool downdrafts which are also responsible for the highest speeds, giving rise to the largest mach numbers, .
• The speeds decrease inwards, whence the supersonic flows are confined to a very shallow layer in the photosphere.
